Correction - The Flores de Mayo Procession is a Filipino Community tradition, not a Portugese tradition as was incorrectly reported in the post below.

As you may remember, I started off my May 2023 message with, “I wish I had AI to write an inspirational letter”. At that time, it was somewhat of a joke, and seemed a long way off in the future. However, it may be closer than we think. What will AI do for us, and what will it not do. To find out, come to our June General meeting, open to all men of the parish, for a very interesting presentation and discussion on the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence.
Thank you for all who participation in the Family of Faith Picnic and the June 1 st Eucharistic Procession. Both events are well appreciated and show our committed service to the parish. Future service opportunities are requested for the Mission Days Parish Event on Sunday, June 9 th . Our task will be to ensure general safety of the participants attending the festivities as well as those moving vehicles. Please consider spending some time on Sunday for an early, midday, and later spots. More details at the meeting on Tuesday.

On May 19th, the Saint Joseph Men's Ministry supported our Faith and Family Ministry with a BBQ for their appreciation picnic. The weather was perfect and the event was attended by about 310 adults and children. Our confirmation candidate also joined in the festivities. There were games, music, snow cones and much more. Children and adults all had a great time in community and fellowship. We are grateful to Grace Lichauco and Nancy Flores for making us part of this awesome event.

The faith and Family team provided the snow cones which were greatly appreciated on the sunny day.

The scouts from Troop 155 came and helped with serving and clean up. Our thanks to the Eagle scouts, the Troop leader Tom Laus and the young men who helped out.

Flores de Mayo Procession - Saturday May 18 2024
Late on a Saturday afternoon prior to the vigil Mass, the Filipino Community continued their annual tradition of processing with a large statue of the Virgin Mary. The Saint Joseph Men’s Ministry (SJMM) provided safety and security for the procession. Instead of processing through the neighborhood adjacent to the Parish, this year’s route went up St. Joseph Terrace, turning on Monticello Terrace and wound through the Dominican Sisters’ grounds.
Roughly 150 parishioners processed stopping at several sites to offer flowers to Mary by girls dressed in their finest. Among the stops were the Meditation Garden and the nearly 100 year old Mater Dei Chapel open for this event.
The procession end in the St. Joseph parking lot followed by the vigil Mass and a celebratory dinner in the church hall afterwards.
Thanks to Ashley Weerpass, Tom Leen, Gary Dorighi, and Greg Stephens for supporting this event.

Our Stained Glass-Saint Mary Magdalene
Our renovated main church is adorned with many beautiful stain glass images. Twelve depicting Saints and four depicting Christ life and teachings. Have you ever wondered about the significance of these beautiful images and their inspiration and messages to us?
This month we highlight the first of the twelve Saints starting with those on the wall by Mission Blvd.
The first closest to the Adoration chapel is the stained-glass depicting Saint Mary Magdalene.
Who was she? What is her significance in the Bible? What aspect of her life is captured in this image?
Mary was a devoted disciple of Jesus who loved him very much. She was named “Apostle of the Apostles” by Saint Thomas Aquinas. She accompanied him to Calvary, observing him from afar, she was there when Joseph of Arimathea placed his body in the Sepulcher and later a stone was moved to cover the entrance. She is the first to encounter our risen Lord and tells the other Apostles the good news. She is often called the “First Evangelizer”
This stained glass is a depiction of the scene outside the tomb after Jesus is risen. Notice the stone rolled away and held by an unknown apostle. Notice the bottle of perfume and garland of flowers reminiscent of her ministering to comfort Jesus.
Pope Francis elevated July 22nd, 2016, as the festivity of Saint Mary Magdalene.
