Founder of the Dominican order

Saint Dominic is also known as Santo Domingo de Guzman, he was bon around 1170 in Caleruega, Castile (Spain). Some may be familiar with the song “popularized by the band Sandpipers “Santa Domingo”. He is the founder of the “Order of Friars Preachers”, commonly known as the Dominicans in 1216. This order emphasizes preaching, scholarship, and centralized organization.

He died in 1221.

Miracles attributed to Saint Dominic

Many of the miracles attributed to Saint Dominic was from testimony of devotees who later themselves were canonized.

  • Reviving a young boy who had been crushed by a falling wall.
  • Exorcising demons from possessed individuals.
  • Multiplying bread and wine during a time of need.
  • Raising people from the dead, such as a widow’s son and the nephew of Cardinal Stephen.

Canonization

Saint Dominic was canonized on July 3,1234 by Pope Gregory IX, 13 years after Dominic’s death. The evidence for canonization involved eyewitness testimonies, of his holiness and miracles, collected in Bologna and Toulouse.

He is the patron saint of astronomers and natural scientists. He is also the patron saint of the Dominican Republic and the city of Santo Domingo.
